The 12-month trial
A randomized controlled trial — "The Prune Study" — had postmenopausal women eat 50 grams of prunes daily, about 5 to 6 prunes, and tracked their bone density over a full year. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 11 studies and 747 participants found a borderline-significant bone density benefit at the lumbar spine as well.2 Larger trials backed by the USDA and the California Prune Board are now running through 2029-2030 to confirm dose and duration more precisely.
